As a classroom teacher, university professor, and mother, I have guided hundreds of all ages, ethnic groups, and abilities through the writing process. My most notable finding was that, regardless of age or ability, all children are natural writers. Children love to look at themselves as authors and to share what they have written with others. I noticed that what they need most is a structured purpose for writing, freedom to choose their topic, and the right “tools” to inspire them to create published works. These insights led me to develop the T.A.G.™ writing program and the elements of this Young Author’s Toolbox. For more than 20 years, I have been teaching elementary school teachers to use the T.A.G..™ program in their classrooms. This writing program has been remarkably successful in motivating children of all grade levels to become authors. Participating in T.A.G..™, also helps improve children’s standardized achievement test scores.
